Your First Brazilian Wax: What to Expect (and Does It Hurt?)

September 9, 2026

first brazilian wax what to expect

If you have been thinking about booking a Brazilian wax and keep talking yourself out of it, you are in very good company. Almost everyone who comes in for their first one says some version of the same thing at the door: “I have no idea what I am doing.” That is completely normal, and the appointment is far less awkward than the version you have built up in your head.

Here is exactly what happens at a first Brazilian wax at Prodigo Day Spa in Harleysville — what it costs, how much it actually hurts, how to prepare, and what to do afterward.

First, What is Brazilian Wax?

A Brazilian removes everything from front to back. That is the main thing that separates it from the other two options on our waxing menu:

Bikini — $55. Everything that peeks out of your bikini bottoms.

Extended bikini — $65. The bikini line plus the hair that grows a little further south than we’d like.

Brazilian — $85. Everything, front to back.

We also offer men’s waxing: a men’s bikini wax is $90 and a men’s Brazilian is $130.

If you are not sure which one you actually want, you do not have to decide alone. Tell your esthetician the results you’re looking for, and they’ll recommend the right service.

Does Brazilian Wax hurt?

The honest answer: a little, and almost certainly less than you are picturing.

The skin in that area is sensitive and the hair is being removed from the root, so there is a sharp sensation — but it is brief. Each strip is over in a second or two, and the whole thing is a handful of minutes of actual work. Most first-timers tell us the anticipation was harder than the appointment.

Your first Brazilian is also the most intense one you will have, because you are removing a full growth cycle all at once. It genuinely gets easier. Waxing pulls hair from the root, so regrowth comes in finer and slower over time. Staying on a consistent schedule gets your hair cycles working together, which usually means less discomfort and longer stretches of smooth skin.

A few things that make the first one easier:

For women, book for the middle of your cycle if you can — skin tends to be more sensitive in the days right before and during your period.

Go easy on caffeine that morning.

Some clients take an over-the-counter pain reliever about 30 minutes beforehand. Optional, but it helps some people relax.

Breathe out as the strip comes off instead of holding your breath.

How to prepare

Prep is most of the difference between a great wax and a frustrating one.

Let it grow. You need about a quarter inch of hair, which is roughly two to three weeks of growth. If the hair is shorter than that, the wax has nothing to grip and the results will not last. Please do not shave, trim, or use hair removal cream in the two weeks before your appointment.

Exfoliate gently a day or two before. Not the day of — just enough to clear dead skin so hair releases cleanly.

Come with clean, dry skin. Skip lotions, oils, and self-tanner on the area that day.

Wear something loose. You will be more comfortable on the drive home.

One thing to tell us before you book: Retinol and Accutane

This is the part people skip, and it matters more than any of the rest.

We cannot wax you if you are currently taking Accutane, or if you stopped taking it within the last 12 months. If you use an over-the-counter or prescription Retinol, stop applying it to the area you are having waxed for one week before your appointment and one week afterward.

This is not paperwork for its own sake. Both thin the skin, and waxing over skin in that state can lift it. If either applies to you, tell us when you book and we will help you plan the timing.

What actually happens in the room

Your appointment is in a private treatment room with a licensed esthetician who does this all day, every day. They will explain each step before it happens, so you are never guessing what comes next.

You will undress from the waist down and get into position on the table — they will tell you exactly how and will reposition you a few times as they work through different sections. Wax goes on in small sections and comes off in the direction that gets the cleanest result. Stray hairs get tweezed at the end, and they will finish with a soothing product to calm the skin.

And the part everyone worries about: estheticians have seen every possible version of this. There is no hair growth pattern, position, or question that is going to surprise anyone. Talking through it is normal and usually makes the whole thing easier.

What to expect afterward

The skin will look pink and feel a little tender for a few hours. That is normal and settles quickly.

For 24 to 48 hours, avoid hot tubs, saunas, tanning, and heavy workouts so freshly waxed skin can settle.

Stick with loose clothing that first day.

Start gently exfoliating again a few days later. This is the single best thing you can do to keep ingrown hairs away.

How often should you come back?

Most clients rebook every four to six weeks. That is the window where hair is long enough to wax properly but you are not walking around waiting on it. Consistency is what gets your hair cycles synced up — which is exactly what makes each appointment more comfortable than the last.
