You found the dress. You booked the photographer. Now comes the beauty question everyone eventually asks: airbrush or traditional makeup? And more importantly, which one will still look good at 10pm, after the toasts, the happy tears and an hour on the dance floor?
Good news: there is no wrong answer here, just a better fit for your skin, your event and your plans for the day. Below, our Harleysville makeup artists break down airbrush vs traditional makeup, what actually makes makeup last, and how to pick the one that fits you.
First, What’s the Difference?
Traditional Makeup
Traditional makeup is the application you already know. Liquid, cream and powder products go on with brushes, sponges and fingertips, and your artist builds coverage layer by layer right on your skin.
It is the most flexible option out there. Want full glam for a gala? Done. Want skin that looks like skin for a brunch shower? Also done. Because there are endless formulas to choose from, traditional makeup can be matched to just about any skin type, texture or finish.
Airbrush Makeup
Airbrush makeup uses a small compressor and a pen-shaped airbrush gun to mist ultra-thin layers of liquid foundation onto your skin. Nothing touches your face except a fine, cool spray, which most people describe as a light breeze.
The result is a smooth, even base that looks soft and polished up close and on camera. Airbrush is mainly used for the base of your look: foundation, blush, contour and highlight. Brows, eyes, lashes and lips are usually still done by hand.
Airbrush vs. Traditional Makeup: Which Lasts Longer?
The short answer: airbrush usually has the edge on staying power.
Most airbrush foundations are silicone or water based formulas made to dry down into a thin, flexible layer. Thin layers mean less product sitting on top of your skin, and less product means less to slide, crease or rub off when you hug Aunt Linda for the fifteenth time. Airbrush also tends to hold up well in heat, humidity and the occasional happy cry.
Traditional makeup can absolutely go the distance too. With the right primer, long-wear formulas and a good setting spray, a traditional look can carry you from your morning hair appointment to the last song of the night. It just usually needs a little more help, and maybe a quick blot and touch-up halfway through.
One honest caveat: how long your makeup lasts depends on your skin and your prep almost as much as the method. Dry, flaky skin will fight any foundation. Well-prepped, hydrated skin makes both options last longer.
Head to Head: How They Compare
- Staying power: Airbrush wins by a nose, especially for long days and warm weather.
- Photos and video: Both photograph beautifully. Airbrush gives a very even, soft-focus base that shines in close-ups and HD video.
- How it feels: Airbrush feels almost weightless. Traditional can be just as light, or as full as you want it.
- Coverage: Airbrush builds from sheer to full in thin layers. Traditional has the widest range, from barely there to full glam.
- Dry or mature skin: Traditional usually wins. Hydrating creams and liquids are more forgiving on dry patches and fine lines.
- Oily skin: Airbrush is a strong pick, since its formulas tend to resist shine and slipping.
- Touch-ups: Traditional is easier. A compact powder and your lip color in your clutch and you are set.
- Price at Prodigo: Traditional application is $85 and airbrush application is $105.
Airbrush Might Be Your Match If…
- Your event runs all day, like a wedding that starts with morning photos and ends with a late reception
- You are celebrating outdoors in the summer (hello, Pennsylvania humidity)
- You have oily or combination skin
- There will be lots of close-up photos and video
- You don’t love the feeling of heavy makeup on your face
Traditional Might Be Your Match If…
- You have dry or mature skin and want a hydrated, natural finish
- You have a very specific look in mind, like a dewy glow or a bold full glam
- Your event is a few hours, like a dinner, a shower or a night out
- You want to be able to touch up on your own throughout the day
How to Make Your Makeup Last (Whichever You Pick)
The method matters, but these habits matter just as much:
- Prep your skin early. Start a few weeks out with regular exfoliation and plenty of water. A facial a week or two before your event gives makeup a smooth canvas to grip.
- Don’t test new skincare the week of. A surprise breakout or reaction is the last thing you need.
- Show up with a clean, moisturized face. Use a light moisturizer and skip heavy oils the morning of your appointment.
- Add lashes. Party lashes ($25) open up your eyes in photos and hold up far better than mascara alone through tears and long hours.
- Hands off. Every time you touch your face, a little makeup goes with your fingers.
- Pack a mini touch-up kit. Blotting papers, a pressed powder and your lip color will cover almost anything the day throws at you.
The Best Way to Decide: Book a Trial
For a wedding, a trial is the easiest way to settle the airbrush vs traditional debate for good. You see your look in person and on camera, and you get to wear it through real life for a few hours. Take selfies in different lighting, go out to dinner, and check how it looks at the end of the night. That tells you more than any comparison chart ever will.
We cover exactly what to expect, and how to get ready for it, in our post on why you need a bridal makeup trial and how to prep.
At Prodigo, a bridal trial is $150. On the big day, bridal makeup is $175 and includes lashes, and wedding party makeup is $125 per person. Wedding parties require a contract and deposit, and an additional charge may apply for off-site services depending on distance.
